siteMighty as a Domain Holding Page

Dave Coustan wrote a post today about his idea for a “hipster domain holding page“. Basically, an easy-to-create placeholder page that you could point your domain name servers to for those 5-50 domain names that we all own that are just sitting there.

Marshall Kirkpatrick talks about the investment that several domainers are making in SharedReviews. It’s no secret that there’s big money and domain real estate. But how about a little money for all of us who own 25 odd domain names?
This is an interesting concept, and something that we could certainly execute through siteMighty.com. It’s already brain-dead easy to point the domain to siteMighty. Your site is automatically embedded with affiliate links that give you the opportunity to earn revenue when someone clicks from your site and performs the desired action. Right now you can market anything you want, as long as that thing as credit cards (We got our inspiration from Henry Ford’s Model T). But in the near future you’ll be able to market a whole lot more.

What if you could customize this page with content about you, and embed some affiliate links and maybe AdSense on it to earn a little revenue whenever somebody goes to this domain?

Through your siteMighty placeholder page you could:

  • embed your Twitter feed
  • embed your blog feed
  • embed your Flickr feed
  • include affiliate links for categories of your choosing
  • include AdSense

Would this one-page site make sense for you? Let us know, we definitely could build it.

Sweet.. I won the Freshbooks contest

zappos.jpgMy good friend Matt told me today that I fancy myself as the arbiter of good customer service. When I see great customer service I love it when I see bad customer service it irks me to no end.

Last week, as I posted here on this blog, I entered a contest sponsored by Freshbooks with a story about Zappos.com customer service. They are company I tremendously respect for valuing customer service. In fact, if you look at their homepage, here is how they describe themselves:

We are a service company that happens to sell… shoes, bags, clothing, accessories.

At any rate, Mike McDerment notified me that I won the contest yesterday, and I’m very excited to be heading to Chicago this Sunday for the SEED conference. Thanks to Freshbooks, Zappos, and all companies that still value customer service.

If you’re in Chicago for the conference on Monday, drop me a line and let’s hook up.

Freshbooks is sponsoring a “best customer service story” contest over on their blog. The winning entry gets a ticket to the sold out SEED Conference hosted by 37 Signals and Coudal Partners.

As a big fan of customer service myself, I submitted the following entry:

Hey Mike and the rest of the Freshbooks team -

I’m writing to submit to the “best customer service story” contest for the seed conference ticket.

The Internet company that I believe has the best customer service going today is Zappos.com. Having ordered from Zappos.com many times, their customer service is phenomenal, and they’re driven by creating the best experience possible for their customers. They’ve truly created a culture of service, this is hard to do within the organization but when they get it right, it’s truly amazing to witness.

Speaking of witnessing it, I had the opportunity to visit Zappos.com in January of this year. I was blown away at how welcoming all of the employees were and how as we walk through the entire building, everyone we passed stood up smiled and waved hello to us. It was a fantastic look at the behind the scenes operation of a truly focused company.

I blogged about it here. After our trip there, and we were so inspired as a company that when we rolled out our “customer service is the new marketing” initiative, we referenced our experience at Zappos:

As far as the best customer service story I’ve ever come across, actually came upon it the other day. It’s not an original story by me, but I think it’s a wonderful example of the extent to which Zappos will go to show that it cares about its customers. Here’s the post . Via Consumerist.

When I came home this last time, I had an email from Zappos asking about the shoes, since they hadn’t received them. I was just back and not ready to deal with that, so I replied that my mom had died but that I’d send the shoes as soon as I could. They emailed back that they had arranged with UPS to pick up the shoes, so I wouldn’t have to take the time to do it myself. I was so touched. That’s going against corporate policy.

Yesterday, when I came home from town, a florist delivery man was just leaving. It was a beautiful arrangement in a basket with white lilies and roses and carnations. Big and lush and fragrant. I opened the card, and it was from Zappos. I burst into tears. I’m a sucker for kindness, and if that isn’t one of the nicest things I’ve ever had happen to me, I don’t know what is.

Tony Hsieh has done a fantastic job building an culture of service within Zappos. During my visit I learned the extent to which the employees are empowered to go to keep a customer happy.

  • If a customer cannot find a shoe they’re looking for on Zappos.com, the customer support rep is empowered to browse competitors websites, Nordstrom.com, shoes.com, and help the customer look for the shoe that they want all the while on the phone with the customer. This is truly about keeping the customer happy.
  • Zappos recently introduced an industry first free shipping both ways. This encourages people to order as many issues as they want in different sizes and try them on. Through this initiative Zappos is competing directly with brick-and-mortar high-end shoe stores.
  • The story above is not the first I’ve heard of Zappos ordering flowers for customers. The culture of WOW encourages employees to go the extra distance to wow their customers with great customer service.

This is truly the company with the best customer service going today.

What’s your best story about great customer service? Submit it to Freshbooks and win.

Video from My Talk at Tulane

Joel Yarmon shot video last night of my talk at the Tulane Entrepreneurship Association. It was a great opportunity to have a great conversation with an interesting audience of fellow entrepreneurs. Thanks to Joel for blogging about this on the Tulane Freeman School Blog.

I’m very excited to have been invited to speak next week at the Tulane Entrepreneurship Association (TEA) meeting. Entrepreneurs are exciting to be around, and none are more exciting than MBAs ready to take on the world.

Being invited to speak brought back memories of going to see these types of talks during my days in the entrepreneurship program at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. I was there in the heyday of the dot.com era, and we had swashbuckling entrepreneurs marching in telling us how they were going to change the world. Their energy and enthusiasm inspired me to start my first company while getting my MBA.

As I’ve always said, there’s no better time to start a business then while you’re in school and your student loans are paying your bills. As an Internet entrepreneur, the biggest difference is that today, the barriers to entry for starting a business are literally crumbling. There really is no better time than now.

If anybody in the New Orleans area is around next Monday, come by the TEA lecture series and get in on the conversation.

If anybody if anybody that can be there reads this post, please let me know what you’d like to talk about in the comments below. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity.
